I had heard about the Japanese Earthquake when it happened, and thought, oh, another one? It never occured to me that it was such a strong quake that it caused a tsnamii which caused most of the lives to be lost, and then there is the failure at the nuclear powerplant.
When I decided to sit down and watch the news one morning (
For some strange reason my Dad decided he was going to lay in bed on a morning instead of go downstairs and turn the news on....so no news for a few days) and only then did I realise the extent of the damage when the second explosion occurred. Then I was hooked.
I also realised that with so many people being washed away by the Tsnami, I had to check the missing people list, confirmed dead list, and confirmed alive list for all my favourite mangakas, voice actors, actors, directors etc. When I saw the long list made on the sites for manga, I was both appalled with myself and with others. How could we see our manga as being the most important thing ever compared to people's lives and homes?
My viewpoint, however changed, when I watched the news this morning and saw that people in Japan could still go about their daily lives, and that it was only Sendai which was affected, not Tokyo and the south of Japan. Sure, Tokyo got the quake, but they weren't in so much damage as Sendai.
In one of my cancelled lessons today, I decided to research the Japan resources on Google. First thing I saw was the donation links. I immediately thought - Haiti - which made me think that they were going to be homeless for over two years. However, after considering the nature of the Japanese and their discipline over food, petrol and water, I started to doubt that there would be much drama like at the Haiti earthquake.
So, I clicked instead on the youtube videos which showed the 'live' earthquake. It was funny to watch people laughing at the quake, videoing each other as some of them screamed in overdramatic reactions, that is until it got worse. Sometimes I couldn't help but laugh as some were saying OMG OMG OMG over 28 times as the quake shook their building. Other time it really knocked you over how bad it was when inside houses and the breaking of glass and cabinets collapsing, threatening to crush the person filming was all too clear.
I then went on the youtube website, as I then realised one of my favourite youtube members was living in Japan. There I was able to get a video up of the after shock of the earthquake. I have to admit, he really made it out to be funny and relaxed, despite the already foreboding knowledge of the Tsnami on its way. Watching his video in english gave me a better perspective of the atmosphere after the earthquake and the general behaviour of the teenagers/students.
I continued to watch his updates over the past few days and from his perspective I have a greater understanding of the situation over in Japan (
turns out that the media can really play things out).
So all I can say to you people in Japan; "
My thoughts are with you and your loved ones. I pray that you all remain safe and that the nuclear plant doesn't blow up. I don't believe you guys deserve that at all. I also hope that those who passed away find peace and that all who are missing are found. Fantasy"
